Welcome to Hearts and Bikes, an event held to bring awareness and to raise money for Hearts and Hands Foundation — the organization responsible for building 20 homes to-date for deserving Native Americans in the Utah area.
Some of us will be cycling the whole route from Bozeman, Montana to Bountiful, Utah – all 500 glorious miles, others will be cycling just the best parts. All of us will enjoy the adventure of a lifetime crossing the mountains of Montana, the forests of Yellowstone and the highlands of Utah. We’ll fish. We’ll raft. We’ll camp. And, we’ll share space with our friends and family around the cooking grill, campfire and on the majestic roads of our Rocky Mountain West.
Each night, for five days, we’ll arrive at a new scenic destination: Old Faithful, Jackson Hole, Montpelier and Mantua. Town-by-town, forest-by-forest, we’ll see Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Utah like never before – over our handlebars with the wind whipping through our hair. What a way to get fit and serve humanity!
We’ll have two classes of cyclists: the Epic Class and the Open Class. Epic Class riders will pedal all 500 miles, doing about 100 miles per day. Open Class riders will ride the best chunks of the same route, riding whatever distance they prefer: 10, 30, 50 miles per day. Anyone is free to ride any section or sections they wish. Ride one full “century” or ride them all. Or, just make up your mind one-day-at-a-time.
Each day will begin and end with big group meals. Along the trail, chase trucks and a motorhome will shadow the riders, offering water, repairs and relief when requested.
Join us for the family adventure of a lifetime! Send your kids a message they’ll never forget: fitness and doing good in the world matter!

As rain clouds rolled through, blessedly dropping the temperature ten degrees, we completed our first 111 miles of cycling. Dan and Tye cooked up the delicious New York Steaks supplied by Stone Meats and the group rejoiced in the personal victory of Mitch — who doggedly churned through the miles on his commuter bike in sandals and who spent three hours MORE in the saddle than the rest of the pack.

From Yuba to Junction, we put away 94 miles, but not before taking a mid-day break to go rafting down the Sevier River. It would’ve been the perfect outing if Mike Conti and Jared Moye hadn’t taken unfair advantage of the other raft in an entirely unprovoked splash attack. By the end of the ride, we were all soaked from soup-to-nuts anyway. All riders were victorious, but the victory did not go without a cost. Mitch spent the entire night vomiting and experiencing other radical bodily events. We’re in camp right now and we’re praying that he didn’t try to ride today (and not just because his escort, Jordan, has our dinner in the back of his truck.)

Fifty-six miles of climbing, climbing, climbing. Then forty miles of zoom, zoom, zoom. We were joined by the Zittings, the Andrews, and Vic Lawrence. Big miles and big fun as we hit our half-way mark.

We learned quickly: wake up early and hit the road before first light. Then, ride like the devil to get as many miles under us as we could before the sun baked the ground. All was well so long as we could get off the road by 1pm and get under some shade. Saint George jumped to 110 degrees after one in the afternoon and nobody wanted to be on the road after that.

At 5:15 am, the Crazy Class riders were pedals-up on a major climb up and over the mountains of the Paiute Reservation on our way down into the scorching deserts of Nevada. On the way back down the mountain, we looped up with the Open Class riders and barreled down on the town of Littlefield. Racing the sun, the Crazy Class zipped through Mesquite and across 18 miles of the I-15 freeway. At the town of Overton, we cut to the East and made our run for the Valley of Fire. By noon Nevada time, we were in the Valley of Fire, our 100 mile ride complete. Air conditioned RVs and fresh-grilled hamburgers awaited us. What an amazing day!

Before the heat set in on the Nevada desert in earnest, we clocked the last miles of our journey. Climbing out of the Valley of Fire, we pushed our tired legs and our road-worn bikes toward the green oasis of Las Vegas. We rode through the hills behind Lake Mead and dropped down behind Lake Las Vegas, where the Open Riders bid us adieu. The ride through town amounted to a Victory Lap, despite searing heat and a heavy headwind. Pulling in to the Orvis’ home, the Crazy Riders didn’t wait to take off their riding gear — they went straight into the pool.
